I wanted to keep the trend going of having a RWD, manual transmission car that comes from a manufacturer with both rally and road racing pedigrees. So I bought a Volvo! Here it is sitting beside my old winter beater…
Since my last winter beater was turbo intercooled (aftermarket) I wanted to keep the trend going so I picked up this 740 turbo for a decent price…
Now I know some of you are probably saying to your computer monitors (or mobile screens) that a turbo E30 is a way cooler winter beater than a Volvo, and I’ll definitely agree with you on that. It’s lighter and more nimble, it’s fast (crept away from a friend’s 2010 STi on a Cobb 94 octane tune) and last winter it was pretty reliable. However, the under body on the car has seen a few too many salty Canadian winters; it’s in rough shape and I know that if I put it through another winter it’s going to need some decent money put into it to keep it road worthy. So instead I decided to buy this Volvo, which is structurally in much, much better shape. I’ll be able to recoup most (if not all) of the cost of the Volvo by selling off the go fast parts that are on the E30. I’m definitely excited that I’ll still be able to do this all winter…
...and I'm also excited that with a few simple mods these cars can be a bit of a wolf in sheep's clothing as well hehe.

Haha, believe me when I say that those pictures were strategically taken in order to hide the typical E30 fender rot, as well as the passenger side door which has rot down the side and across the bottom, and as I mentioned it's the underside which is in pretty bad shape. Before last winter I had to patch this hole in the driver's foot well, it gave a new meaning to having a dead pedal...

Missing part of your floor boards? you must have hit the NOS button while running from some cops, did your intake manifold welds pop too? lol

Well it's one of those cheap ebay turbo manifolds, so it's probably been pretty close to popping some welds lol . For that reason I made a sweet 1/4" thick plastic splash guard for the under tray to prevent slush and shit from splashing up on to the manifold and potentially causing quench cracking.

I'm sorry I was making a fast and furious joke because of the floor board damage haha.
In all seriousness, floor rust sucks I have some in the Montego.

I know it was an FnF joke. I was just pointing out that with the manifold I have popping welds isn't too far fetched lol

I support this. I moved from a 2.3 Foxbody Mustang to a Volvo 240 as a winter beater. I had to drive the Mustang for 3 winters and effectively ruined it in the process. I have now done 3 winters in the Volvo, and while it is somewhat worse for wear, I would have to say it has held up far better than the Mustang did. A word of caution though: if you half ass a snow drift in a RWD Volvo, or back off the gas midway, you will understeer terribly. That has been my experience anyway. I bent a control arm 45* learning that. Smacked into a curb.
